1 ) What type of person do I need to be to get into Civil Construction? Civil construction is for people who want to make a difference. It is a job where you can really make an impact, leave your mark, work with other talented people and be well rewarded. If you are a practical person who likes to work with their hands and perhaps would like to operate earthmoving plant you can become a trainee in the industry. As an engineer you can shape your city for the future and be in demand across the world. 2 ) What are the most important requirements for me to have if I want to enter the Civil Construction industry and have the opportunity to 'move up the ladder'? We all speak about 'Employability Skills' (what an Employer expects from you as a worker) that is - Be Reliable - turn up 30 minutes early before work; Have a Positive Attitude - be there to work for the full day being part of the Civil Team. i.e. 'Getting the job done'; Show Initiative - look around, what else can you do to keep the job moving; and Follow Instructions - you are there to learn and contribute to the days tasks, learn from the Leading Hands, Trainers, Supervisors etc. 3 ) Will I be able to operate Plant when I start my Apprenticeship/Traineeship? Plant operation is part of qualification, but is not delivered until be latter part of the training program, to ensure the Trainee has gained enough underpinning knowledge and exposure to work with and around Plant. 4 ) How long is the Apprenticeship/Traineeship? A certificate III Apprenticeship/Traineeship has a nominal duration of 3 years, but may be reduced through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). 5 ) What is the difference between an Apprenticeship and a Traineeship? There is only one Apprenticeship in Civil Construction and that is Plant Operation. An Apprenticeship attracts State Government Funding for the training delivery of both New entrants and Existing employees, which is paid to the nominated Registered Training Organisation(RTO). A Traineeship in Civil Construction can be either at Certificate II level having a nominal duration of 18 months or Certificate III level having a nominal duration of 3 years. Certificate III Traineeships in Civil Construction are a Trade equivalent qualification, but only New entrants are Funded by the State Government for the training delivery and Existing workers are trained under a Fee For Service arrangement. 6 ) Can I finish my apprenticeship in an earlier time frame? An apprentice can finish in an earlier timeframe - this can be achieved by recognition of prior learning (RPL), Credit Transfers or if the worksite is conducive to the trainee experiencing all the necessary underpinning skills required to achieve their competencies. 7 ) Do I have to attend off the job training? A great deal of your Training will be on-site at your work location; however, part of the learning process may require you to attend theory courses off site. This would be delivered at either a Civil Train facility or at an onsite location. 8 ) Do I have a mentor? At anytime the trainee can contact the Trainer/Assessor to discuss matters relating to their training. Onsite the site supervisor will help the trainee work through their training. 9 ) Who delivers my training? At your initial sign up with Civil Train the Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you will meet your Trainer/Assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will support the trainee/apprentice throughout their training to ensuring they acquire the industry standard knowledge and skills. 10 ) How do I choose my training subjects that I need to be trained in during the apprenticeship? Each Qualification in the industry has a certain number of core subjects that must be selected the elective subjects are chosen during the initial induction process with the Trainee/Company representative and the Trainer/Assessor. The electives are selected to give the best outcomes for the Trainee and Company respectively. 11 ) How often does the Trainer/Assessor visit? The Trainer/Assessor visits the site (Site Visits) every three months. Prior to the visit Civil Train contact the HR departments of each company / Site Supervisors and Trainee to inform them of visit date. 12 ) Does the Traineeship have a probation period? For Certificate III the probation period is generally 90 days. 13 ) What happens if I leave the company before I finish my apprenticeship? If a trainee leaves the company prior to finishing the traineeship the Company will cancel the traineeship with them. The trainee is given a certificate of partial completion (this for any competencies achieved). | ||
